Spaceballs: Fashion Disaster or Genius? (Hear me out!)

Okay, so I just rewatched Spaceballs for, like, the hundredth time. Obvs, it's hilarious. But I started thinking… are the costumes actually good? Like, ironically good? Hear me out before you @ me! Dark Helmet's helmet – yeah, it's ridiculous, but it's also iconic. It's such a blatant rip-off of Darth Vader, but the sheer size of it is what makes it so memorable. And Prince Valium's ridiculously poofy hair and like, matching satin pajamas? Chef's kiss. It's so '80s decadent. Then there's Princess Vespa. At first, she seems almost normal-ish, until you realize her wedding dress is basically a giant meringue with sparkly netting. And the Druish Princess outfit reveal? That metallic bikini thing? It's over the top, but it fits the exaggerated, satirical world of the movie perfectly. I think the whole point is that everything is so intentionally bad, it comes back around to being amazing. Like they are going for the most campy and awful outfits humanly possible. My theory is that Mel Brooks and the costume designers were deliberately going for 'so bad it's good.' They weren't trying to create timeless fashion statements; they were trying to amplify the absurdity and humor of the film. And honestly, I think they succeeded! It is so memorable. I also think the contrasts play into the visual jokes - that 'normal' outfits like Dot Matrix's are meant to seem out of place in this wacky universe. Thoughts? Also, side note: did anyone else notice how the Spaceballs uniforms are all slightly different shades of grey? Maybe they were trying to save money on dye? LOL! Or is it a subtle comment on uniformity? Anyway, let me know your opinions!
