Spaceballs: Okay, I Think I Get the Star Wars Thing Now?
Alright, so I just watched Spaceballs. I'm trying to dip my toes into some, like, ACTUAL classic movies. I know, I know, I'm super late on this one. I had NO idea what to expect. The plot description was pretty vague. Honestly, I went in thinking it was just some dumb space movie. I was...kind of right, but also wrong? It was dumb, but in the BEST way. First of all, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet? GENIUS. The scene where he's playing with the action figures? I lost it. I literally had to pause the movie because I was laughing so hard. John Candy as Barf (part man, part dog, his own best friend!) was also amazing. I've never seen John Candy in anything before, but I'm definitely gonna check out more of his movies. Lone Starr was cool too, but more like a straight man to all the crazy surrounding him. I had to Google what Mel Brooks does, and apparently he did a LOT of comedy movies, so I will have to check those out too. The whole self-aware thing was wild, especially the using "the Schwartz" instead of that force thing. And the instant replay?! Genius. Also, I caught a Star Trek reference too. Was that a thing back then/ do Star Wars people hate Star Trek people? I feel lost! Anyway, this was way funnier than I expected, and WAY more self-referential than any movie I've watched before, so it was awesome. Okay, is it "The Godfather" or "Citizen Kane" level stuff? No. But did I laugh my butt off for 90 minutes AND maybe kinda understand what the Star Wars hype is even about? Yes. Yes, I did. And that's a win in my book. What Mel Brooks movies should I watch next?!
