Raising Arizona: The Coens Being Their Quintessential Quirky Selves
Okay, so I finally got around to Raising Arizona and, wow, it's pure Coen Brothers gold. I'm working my way through their filmography (next up: Miller's Crossing) and this one definitely sits high on the list. It's just... so damn weird and hilarious. I’m still trying to get my head around it. Between H.I. McDunnough’s (Nic Cage at peak Cage-ness) narration and Ed's (Holly Hunter) intense desire for a baby, the whole thing is just wonderfully absurd from the jump. What really got me was the chase scene with Leonard Smalls (who the heck is that guy anyway, John Goodman's character’s partner??). The mix of slapstick and genuine danger, with the bank robberies going wrong and the close calls, is masterful. And the biker from hell? What was even happening there? It felt straight out of a nightmare! I also have to say, the use of music is superb. It really adds to the whole cartoonish, slightly unhinged feel. I think where the movie shines is in its heart, though. Even with all the crazy antics and over-the-top characters, you feel for H.I. and Ed. You understand their longing and their desperation, even if you don't agree with their methods, LOL. Finding out they name him Nathan Arizona Jr. is hilarious since he's clearly not 'theirs'. Their longing is palpable! Also, Cage is so weirdly endearing in this. I think it's his best performance. Now, I wouldn't say it's a perfect film (sometimes the wackiness felt a little too much), but it's definitely one I'll be thinking about for a while. Anyone else find it strangely moving considering how ridiculous it all is? What are your favorite Coen Brothers movies? Hit me with your recs!
