Okay, is "The Natural" too cheesy, or is it just me?

Alright, film buffs! So I finally got around to watching "The Natural" (1984) last night. I know, I know, I'm late to the party. I've always been told its a classic, and the cinematography is supposed to be amazing, but I'm so torn! On one hand, Caleb Deschanel's work is undeniably gorgeous. The golden hour shots, especially when Roy Hobbs first steps up to the plate with Wonderboy... like, chef's kiss. And the way they use slow motion to build the tension! Incredible. But then there's the whole story... it's just SO over-the-top! The whole damsel-in-distress, magical bat, making up for lost time thing is a little much. Barbara Hershey's character is amazing though! So, my question is: Does the stunning cinematography and direction elevate the somewhat corny plot, or does the corniness detract from the visuals? I mean, is it supposed to be this melodramatic and larger than life, almost like a fable? Or is it just a bit too saccharine for modern tastes? I'm leaning towards the former, but I'd love to hear your thoughts! Did anyone else feel like they were watching a really beautiful, slightly ridiculous, fever dream? Tell me I'm not alone here!
