A Room With a View: Overrated Period Piece or Something More Sinister?
Okay, look, everyone fawns over "A Room With a View." Merchant Ivory, romantic Tuscany, young Helena Bonham Carter...blah blah blah. I just rewatched it, and honestly, I think everyone's missing the point. Or maybe I'm the only one seeing it. Hear me out. Isn't it just a little creepy how obsessed the Emersons are with Lucy? Like, George just forces himself on her in that poppy field. And everyone just glosses over it because...'oh, he's being honest and passionate!' Honesty doesn't excuse assault, people! It's all very 'noble savage' coded, isn't it? The "unrefined" Emerson showing up all the stuffy English people. And Charlotte Bartlett? Everyone hates her because she's a prude. But she's also the only one actually seeing George for the weirdo he is. She's trying to protect Lucy from what is arguably predatory behavior! Maybe she's annoying, but I think she picks up on something everyone else is swooning too much to notice. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I think it had some bad implications and some unaddressed issues. I still liked it somehow lol.
