Lost Boys: Still Holds Up, But Let's Talk About That Pacing...
Okay, so I just rewatched "The Lost Boys" and, man, it's still a blast. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission (or, you know, the streaming subscription). But as an editor, I gotta talk about the pacing. It's... interesting. The first act is almost too fast. We're thrown into Santa Carla, meet Michael and Sam, BAM, Michael's crushing on Star and suddenly hanging with Kiefer Sutherland's gang of leather-clad vamps. Like, hold up, let me catch my breath! I get what the director was going for – a sense of immediacy and teenage impulsiveness. But I think the scene where Michael first "loses it" could have had a tad more build-up. We don't really see the full scope of these vampires until the bonfire scene. It's terrifying, don't get me wrong, but maybe a quick glimpse earlier, a hint of their true nature, would have made Michael's descent feel more earned. And what ever happened to the dog? Was he just there to look cute? On the flip side, the Frog Brothers are pure gold. They absolutely nail the comedic timing, and their over-the-top enthusiasm is infectious. And Corey Feldman? He's just peak 80s. I wouldn't change a thing about their scenes. The climax, though... a little chaotic, right? It's fun, don't get me wrong, but it's a bit of a free-for-all. I think some tighter editing in that final showdown could have really elevated the tension. Overall, "The Lost Boys" is a classic for a reason. The style, the music, the performances...it's all iconic. But it's a good reminder that even the most beloved movies can have flaws, and that's okay! It still goes down as a great vampire movie, and its got that 80's charm that can't be faked.
