Wall Street (1987) - Still Holds Up?
Okay, so I just rewatched "Wall Street" (the OG, not the sequel) and man, that movie still hits hard. The pacing in it is almost relentless - which is perfect for the story. Gordon Gekko's speech, "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good," is legendary. I mean, it's so over-the-top, but it's delivered with such conviction by Michael Douglas. Honestly, he just becomes the embodiment of Wall Street excess. But what really gets me is how naive Bud Fox is. He's so eager, so hungry, that he's willing to throw everything away for a shot at the big time. I think those scenes where Sheen is wrestling with his conscience are some of his best work. I think it's interesting to compare Bud's ambition with his father's (Martin Sheen). His dad is this salt of the earth, blue collar guy, and it creates such a great foil. You see exactly where the friction comes from. One thing I noticed this time around is how quickly Bud gets sucked in. It's like one minute he's making cold calls, and the next he's living in a penthouse and dating Daryl Hannah. The montage sequences really sell that transformation, and for an '80s movie, they feel remarkably tight. There are definitely some cheesy 80s moments (dat hair!), but that's part of the charm. I think Oliver Stone did a solid job showing the seductive power of money and how easily people can be corrupted. It makes you wonder how much has actually changed since then? Maybe it's just me, but seeing the insider trading and the win-at-all-costs mentality, it feels like this movie is still relevant today. I feel like the director does a great job of using the camera to make the skyscrapers feel massive and imposing. It's a subtle way of showing how small the characters are in this world. My only real gripe is maybe the ending feels a little rushed? Like Bud's redemption is a bit too clean, you know? But overall, still a really solid flick. What do you guys think? Any moments that stood out to you on a rewatch?
