Okay, so I watched Over the Top... and I have thoughts
Alright, spill the tea. I finally caved and watched Over the Top (1987). Yes, the Stallone arm wrestling movie. Look, I went in expecting… well, I don't even know WHAT I expected. But '80s cheese factor was high, no doubt. And it delivered on that. Honestly, Stallone's performance as Lincoln Hawk… it's interesting. He's trying to be this gruff, emotionally stunted guy, but you can see the vulnerability there, especially in his scenes with his son. The whole custody battle storyline actually gave the movie a bit of heart, and I was genuinely rooting for him to connect with the kid. Although, like, the kid (David Mendenhall) was so... dramatic, lol. I almost didn't buy the relationship. That scene in the truck when they are bonding and Hawk tells him to turn his cap backwards to show he means business? Peak '80s. I laughed. Now, let's talk about the arm wrestling. Honestly, I was surprised by how invested I got! They really sold the intensity of those matches. Like, you could see the veins popping, the sweat dripping, the sheer force these guys were exerting. It felt real, even when it was completely over-the-top (pun intended, ha!). The final match against Bull Hurley (Terry Funk) was pure spectacle. Did I get a little teary-eyed during the father-son reconnection moment at the end? Maybe. Don't judge me. It's cheesy, but effective. Overall, Over the Top is a wildly imperfect but strangely compelling movie. It's not gonna win any Oscars, but it's a fun, nostalgic ride with a surprisingly touching core. Would I recommend it? Depends. If you're in the mood for some unapologetic '80s machismo and don't mind a heavy dose of cheese, then absolutely give it a watch. Just don't expect a cinematic masterpiece. More like a cinematic guilty pleasure.
