Angels, Typewriters, and the Wall: My "Wings of Desire" Theory (Hear Me Out)

Okay, people, moviebuff_marc here, back from another cinematic dive into the late 80s. Just watched "Wings of Desire" (finally, I know, I know – forgive me!) and I'm all kinds of messed up in the head. This isn't your typical angel movie, that's for damn sure. It’s more like…what if Wim Wenders had directed a lost chapter of "City of Angels" after binge-watching some Bergman films and downing a case of German beer? So, here's my half-baked theory: the angels, especially Damiel, aren't just observers. They're like… the city's collective subconscious. Think about it. They're drawn to moments of intense emotion, despair, hope – all the stuff bubbling under the surface of Berlin. And the kids? The kids can SEE them. Kids are always more attuned to that kind of stuff, right? Maybe it's because they are closer to the spiritual realm, I don’t know. Plus, Damiel's fascination with Marion, the trapeze artist, isn't just about wanting to experience physical sensation. It's about wanting to feel truly connected, to be part of that human experience, not just a detached observer. The scene where he's listening to the old man ramble about Berlin's history? That's not just exposition; it's DAMIEL trying to understand the soul of the city he's been watching over for centuries. My big question is, and it's a bit of a reach maybe: is the wall connected to all this? Think about the black and white cinematography for the angel's point of view versus that burst of color when Damiel becomes human. The wall is this HUGE, stark divide, literally separating people, but also representing the division between observation and experience, between the ethereal and the real. When Damiel crosses over, it's like he's breaking through that barrier, embracing the messy, colorful chaos of life, even if it means feeling pain and loss. It's a bit "Pleasantville" in reverse, I guess. Anyway, I'm probably way off base, but that's the beauty of movies, right? They make you think. What's your take? Am I totally nuts?
