Okay, okay, hear me out about Superman IV...
Alright, film buffs! Hannahfilmbuff here, back with another deep dive into a movie most people love to hate... Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Look, I KNOW. It's cheesy. The effects are... questionable, especially Nuclear Man. I mean, what WAS that hair?! But honestly, I find myself oddly fascinated by this movie, and every time I watch it (which is, admittedly, probably WAY too often), I notice something new. This time, I was really paying attention to the themes. They're REALLY heavy-handed, obviously, but the message about nuclear disarmament is... well, it's still relevant today. And Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor? Still gold. Seriously, even when the movie is objectively bad, Hackman elevates it. I also kinda love that Superman's driven by that kid, Jeremy, who writes to him about the arms race. It's a sappy plot device, sure, but it grounds Superman's decision in a surprisingly human way. And that whole scene where Superman gathers up all the nukes and throws them into the sun? So ridiculously ambitious, it's almost beautiful because it's so flawed. Plus, I always giggle at the awkward romance between Superman and Lacy Warfield. Margot Kidder was missed, but Mariel Hemingway did her best, I think. I still think it's underrated in the sense that people dismiss it so quickly, they maybe miss what it's trying to say (even if it says it badly, lol). So, yeah. Superman IV. Not a great movie. Definitely a flawed gem, or maybe just a lump of coal with a shiny wrapper. But it's...memorable. What are your thoughts? Anyone else have a soft spot for this one, or am I totally alone on this island? Maybe I need to book a therapy appointment. LOL. Let me know!
