Innerspace: Tuck Pendleton, Secretly a Sociopath?
Okay, so I've seen Innerspace a lot. Like, a concerning amount. And something's been bugging me. We're all supposed to root for Tuck, right? The charming, wisecracking pilot stuck inside poor Jack Putter. But the more I watch, the more I think Tuck is, like, a low-key sociopath. Hear me out! Think about it. He's piloting a super-dangerous, experimental vehicle. Does he express any concern for Jack's well-being AT ALL? Nope! It's all about him getting out. He manipulates Jack, freaks him out, and basically treats him like a walking, talking escape vessel. Remember when he's pushing Jack to be brave saying like, 'You have it in you!' while knowing full well Jack's just a nervous wreck? That's textbook manipulation, people! And then there's Lydia! He only seems to care about her as a way to get out. Okay, fine, maybe he genuinely loves her. But even then, his own survival always seems to come first. The whole bar fight scene? He's egging Jack on, potentially putting him in serious danger, just to send a message. It's reckless! I know it's a comedy, but still! Maybe I'm overthinking it, and maybe Dennis Quaid's charm just blinds us all. But the next time you watch Innerspace, try to see Tuck from Jack's perspective. Suddenly doesn't seem quite so heroic, does he? Or am I just crazy? Let me know your thoughts!
