Jaws: The Revenge - So Bad It's... Kinda Good?
Okay, so I just subjected myself to Jaws: The Revenge and wow. Just... wow. I went in knowing it was considered the 'worst' Jaws movie, and yeah, it lives up to that reputation, lol. Like, the shark following Ellen Brody all the way to the Bahamas because it has a personal vendetta? Seriously? It's hilariously bad. I can see why critics shredded it back in '87. That being said... I kinda enjoyed parts of it? The underwater photography is actually really pretty, and Michael (Ellen's son) is a marine biologist, so there are some genuinely interesting scenes with sea life. And Mario Van Peebles is in it! He's charming as Jake, Michael's research partner. Plus, Lorraine Gary as Ellen is really trying, bless her heart. You can tell she's giving it her all, even when the plot is completely bonkers. There's this voodoo scene that is...a choice. I won't spoil anything, but be prepared to roll your eyes into next week. For family viewing though? Honestly, I'd skip it unless your kids are older and can appreciate the sheer ridiculousness. Some of the shark attacks are pretty intense, and the overall tone is definitely darker than the earlier films. My oldest (13) thought it was hilarious because it was so bad, but my youngest (9) was a bit creeped out. I still prefer the original Jaws - a classic for a reason - but The Revenge is definitely a memorable (if not entirely positive) cinematic experience. Anyone else have thoughts on this one? Was I too harsh, or am I being generous with my enjoyment?!
