"Jaws: The Revenge" - So Bad It's... Fascinating? (Sound & VFX Thoughts)
Okay, so I just rewatched "Jaws: The Revenge" (don't judge!). I know, I know, it's considered the worst of the franchise, and honestly, a lot of it IS pretty terrible. But as a big special effects and sound design nerd, I found myself oddly... fascinated? Specifically, there's that scene where the shark roars – yes, ROARS – like a lion. Come on! Was somebody on the sound team just having a laugh? I mean, the original Jaws had such realistic and terrifying shark sounds. What happened?! And then there are the visual effects. The shark's movements are so jerky and unnatural in some shots. Like, the scene where it "attacks" the boat at the end? It practically teleports. Did they run out of budget, or was the shark puppet just malfunctioning? But... I'm almost drawn to the sheer ineptitude of it all. It's like a train wreck you can't look away from. Plus, Mario Van Peebles' Jamaican accent is legendary. Is it offensive? Probably. Is it unintentionally hilarious? Absolutely. Seriously though, are there any other tech-minded folks out there who've noticed these things? I'm not trying to defend the movie as "good" (it's definitely not). But I'm curious if anyone sees any strangely compelling technical aspects in its awfulness. Or am I just alone in finding this movie weirdly entertaining from a technical failure standpoint? And one last thing: that ending... how exactly did Ellen Brody kill the shark with a piece of the boat? I need someone to explain the physics of that. Did it explode? What was the actual mechanism? It's been bugging me for years!
