Okay, "Moonstruck"... I'm Conflicted!

Alright, so I just watched "Moonstruck" (1987) and WOW, I am all over the place. I went in knowing basically nothing, just that it was a classic and Cher was amazing, which, duh, she IS. But like... is this supposed to be a rom-com? A family dramedy? Because there were moments that were straight-up hilarious (the dinner scene with the Castorini family is comedy GOLD), and then other moments that were so ridiculously melodramatic I almost choked on my popcorn. Nicholas Cage's character Ronny is intense!! Like, screaming at the moon intense! And the whole Loretta falling for Ronny thing felt a little...sudden? Like, she's engaged to his BROTHER, for crying out loud! Cher as Loretta is fantastic though. She really sells the whole "I'm practical and unlucky in love" vibe, and you totally root for her to find some happiness, even if it's with the volatile Ronny. I think what threw me off the most was the whiplash between the super comedic and the super dramatic. Like, Olympia Dukakis deserves every award for her performance, especially that scene where she confronts the professor... so good! But then later, everyone is just yelling at each other about opera and lost limbs, and I'm like, WAIT, what movie am I watching again? Honestly I was expecting something a little less chaotic? I think it's a movie that is more beautiful and fun than deep. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I definitely needed a minute to process everything afterwards. I think I need to rewatch it to pick up on the tone. Maybe I missed something, or maybe its just a really weird movie! What do you all think of the ending? Was it satisfying or just completely bonkers? I wanna know your opinions!
