By the Power of Grayskull? Revisiting MOTU 1987!

Okay, confession time. Did anyone else grow up absolutely OBSESSED with He-Man? I remember watching the cartoon religiously, and when "Masters of the Universe" (1987) finally came out, my little 8-year-old self was beyond hyped. Seeing Dolph Lundgren as He-Man was... well, it was something, alright! He definitely looked the part, but his acting… let's just say he wasn't winning any Oscars. Still, nostalgia goggles are strong with this one, folks. What I found interesting rewatching it now, through parent eyes, is how... weirdly dark it is in some places. Skeletor, played by Frank Langella, is genuinely menacing. He's not just Saturday morning cartoon evil; Langella brings a real gravitas to the role. And honestly, the Earth plotline feels kinda shoehorned in. I get why they did it – setting the story in a regular American town probably saved a ton on budget – but I always preferred Eternia. Though, I will admit, the Cosmic Key being used as a boombox was peak 80s. My kids (ages 6 and 9) watched it with me this weekend. They were… unimpressed. My son thought He-Man's sword was 'lame' (ouch!), and my daughter kept asking why Teela was dressed like that. Kids these days, I tell ya! They preferred the She-Ra cartoon revival, which is fair, it's much better written. But still, a little part of me was hoping they'd appreciate the campy goodness of it all. Overall, "Masters of the Universe" is a flawed movie, but it holds a special place in my heart. It's a fun, cheesy, over-the-top ride, especially if you grew up with the franchise. Just don't expect high art, lol. More like high cheese, am I right? Anyone else have fond (or not-so-fond!) memories of this one? Let's hear 'em!
