Masters of the Universe (1987): Still a Weirdly Awesome Mess?

Okay, so I've watched Masters of the Universe (1987), like, a million times since I was a kid. And every single time, I notice something new. I just rewatched it last night and the sheer level of commitment Dolph Lundgren had to being He-Man is actually kind of impressive. That man believed. Even if the script... wasn't always helping him out, lol. What really blows my mind this time around is how they just... threw in the whole California teen plot line. I mean, I get it, budget reasons meant they couldn't showcase Eternia as much as they wanted and they needed a way for the Cosmic Key to end up in the hands of random teenagers, but it's SO jarring. But also, like, weirdly endearing? I kinda love how Billy Barty just pops up in a trash can. It's completely random. And speaking of random, Frank Langella as Skeletor is pure gold. He's clearly having the time of his life. The line delivery when he's finally taken Grayskull is just... chef's kiss. I think I enjoy his performance way more as an adult than I did as a kid. Seriously, I think this one's a flawed gem. I wouldn't tell anyone to go out of their way to see it but if it's on and you're bored, it's a fun time. Someone tell me I'm not the only one who secretly loves this movie? Oh, and PS - Did anyone else notice how the makeup and set design are clearly 'borrowing' from Blade Runner in some scenes? I swear I saw a flying spinner car! LOL
