Overboard (1987): Criminally Underrated or Problematic Favorite?

Okay, so I just re-watched Overboard the other night (the original, obv, not that remake...), and I'm still wrestling with it. On one hand, Goldie Hawn is comedic GOLD. The timing, the physical comedy, the sheer...bitchiness before the amnesia – it's all top-tier. The scene where she's just relentlessly complaining about the closet is seriously iconic. And Kurt Russell? Dude's got serious Dad-bod charisma going on, plus his exasperation with her is totally believable. But, and this is a big but, the whole premise is…well, it's kinda messed up, right? Taking advantage of someone with amnesia like that is ethically shaky, to put it mildly. And while I get the revenge angle and the "she deserves it" setup, it still sits a little weird with me in 2024. I think the movie skirts by because it frames Dean (Russell) as eventually caring for Joanna/Annie, and the kids are adorable, but the initial manipulation is hard to ignore. From an editing perspective, the pacing is actually pretty solid. The first act does a good job of establishing Joanna's awfulness and Dean's financial struggles. Then, boom, she falls overboard and the chaos begins. It doesn't drag, and each scene generally serves a purpose. The shifts between the rich, pampered life she previously had and the chaotic, messy life Dean creates are cleverly contrasted. It's a product of its time, no doubt, but there's a reason it still gets talked about. So what do you guys think? Is Overboard a funny-but-problematic classic, or is the premise too gross to enjoy? I'm genuinely curious to hear some other opinions on this one. Maybe I'm just overthinking it and need to chill… but those ethics are hard to shake, especially when you think about the power dynamic.
