Rewatching "Can't Buy Me Love" - Still Holds Up?

Okay, international film snob here, but sometimes you just need a dose of 80s cheese, right? I recently revisited "Can't Buy Me Love," yeah, the one where Patrick Dempsey buys popularity, and I gotta say, it's still strangely charming. Look, it's no "Bicycle Thieves," but for a high school rom-com, it hits some surprisingly poignant notes. The whole concept is problematic, of course – Ronald literally buys his way into Cindy's world after she ruins her mom's expensive clothes. But Dempsey's awkwardness as Ronald is so endearing, you almost forget how ridiculous the premise is. I remember cringing so hard when he started doing 'the African Anteater Dance'. Seriously, what was that?! But also, I almost choked on my popcorn laughing. The movie does a decent job showing how his popularity affects his old friends and makes him kind of a jerk. He really does change. The scene where he finally apologizes to his old crew after ditching to hang with the cool kids felt pretty real. I also loved the little subplot with the other nerdy kids getting makeovers & gaining confidence - some of my friends and I did the same when we got to university! What I do find interesting is how the movie portrays the "popular" crowd. They are definitely cliche, but also very vulnerable. Cindy, in particular, has a lot of hidden insecurity. Although she is very privileged and wealthy and this colors her entire world, the film shows she is aware of it, and trapped by it. Overall it makes you think about popularity and fitting in instead of just taking things at face value. Anyways, I'm curious what everyone else thinks after all these years. Is it just nostalgia talking, or does "Can't Buy Me Love" still have something to say about fitting in and being true to yourself? What other movies are you all watching?
