Is "The Secret of My Success" secretly underrated? 🤔
Okay, so I rewatched "The Secret of My Success" the other day (don't judge, sometimes you just need cheesy 80s wish fulfillment, right?). And I'm honestly wondering...is Michael J. Fox's performance in this kinda underrated? Like, yeah, it's a silly movie, but he's working overtime to sell that whole 'country bumpkin turned corporate shark' thing. The physical comedy alone, especially when he's bouncing between the mailroom and his "executive" suite, is pure gold. What I'm really curious about, though, is the underlying commentary on corporate greed. It's obviously not subtle, but Fox actually manages to hint at Brantley's growing discomfort with the double life and the questionable ethics. Like, that scene where he's arguing with his aunt Vera about the company's future...you can see the genuine conflict in his eyes. It's not just about getting the girl; it's about doing the right thing, even if it means blowing his cover. Also, I know Sharon Stone isn't given a ton to work with beyond being the alluring aunt, but she's got a great chemistry with Fox. Anyone else think if the script gave her more room to maneuver, she would've have shined even brighter? So I gotta ask: Am I giving this film too much credit? Or is there more going on beneath the surface than people remember? What do y'all think of Fox's work in this one?
