Hidden Gem Alert: Is 'The Secret of My Success' Secretly Genius?
Alright action junkies, hear me out. I know, I know, a Michael J. Fox rom-com from the 80s isn't exactly Bloodsport material. But I just rewatched The Secret of My Success and I gotta say, it's holding up WAY better than I expected. And yeah, it's light and fluffy, but under all that 80s hair and shoulder pads, there's some seriously sharp satire going on. Think about it: Brantley Foster comes to NYC, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to conquer the world. Gets smacked down hard. So he invents a persona, "Carlton Whitfield," to get his foot in the door. And the movie's playing with that idea of how much of success is just smoke and mirrors, faking it 'til you make it. Plus, the physical comedy is actually really well-done. I mean, the scene where he's juggling both identities at the party? Good stuff! No explosions or fights, but still a certain level of intensity when he's racing around trying not to get caught. Maybe it's just me, but I think there's a subtle commentary on corporate culture and the obsession with image. It's not preachy, but it's there. Like, when Brantley/Carlton is just being himself, he actually brings fresh ideas to the company. But nobody takes him seriously at first because of his perceived lack of 'experience.' All that stuff feels pretty relevant today too, ya know? He's kinda like a comedic Ethan Hunt, pulling off the ultimate con to save the day - albeit with a lot more awkward dancing. So, maybe I'm stretching it linking this to my usual action movie leanings, but I think it's worth a revisit. Don't go in expecting John Woo, but be open to some unexpected social commentary and some genuinely funny physical gags. What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or is this movie secretly smarter than we give it credit for?
