"Roxanne": Big Nose, Bigger Soundtrack Love!
Okay, soundtrack nerds, let's talk "Roxanne." Yeah, the Steve Martin movie with the uh... prominent proboscis. I re-watched it last night and, while the movie itself is a fun, fluffy 80s rom-com, the score really got me. Bruce Smeaton did the music, and it's just... perfect. It's got this whimsical, almost fairytale-like quality that really underscores (pun INTENDED!) the whole Cyrano vibe. It never gets too heavy-handed either, which is key for a comedy like this. There are cues that are straight-up romantic, especially when C.D. is trying to woo Roxanne through Chris. I specifically dig the scene where Chris is spouting C.D.'s lines at the bar. The music swells just enough to make you feel the feels but doesn't overwhelm the comedic awkwardness. It's a delicate balance, and Smeaton nails it. I'm also a sucker for the more action-oriented cues during the fire scenes - gives those moments a heroic, almost John Barry-esque feel. I know a lot of people probably remember the songs more (like "Every Breath You Take" montage - cringeeeeee), but Smeaton's orchestral score is the unsung hero (double pun intended!). It's one of those scores where it feels so perfectly woven into the film that you barely notice it consciously, but it's doing so much heavy lifting emotionally. Anyone else out there appreciate this one? I'm always looking for more Smeaton appreciation... he's kinda underrated, honestly. Also, quick q: does anyone know if an expanded score even EXISTS or if it's just the tracks that made it to that old soundtrack release? Chime in if you know!
