Throw Momma From The Train: Dark Comedy Gold (or just really twisted?)
Okay, so I just re-watched "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987). I know, I know, it's not exactly international cinema, but bear with me! Sometimes you just need a good, dark comedy, and this one delivers. Danny DeVito directed it, by the way... and starred! I always forget he directed too. Anyways, the premise is just insane. Larry, the struggling writer, is super relatable with his ex-wife Margaret driving him nuts. Then Owen, this sweet but kinda creepy guy from Larry's writing class, gets the idea to 'exchange' murders like in a Hitchcock film. Think of it as the Strangers on a Train version directed by Danny DeVito. The scene where Owen tries to… you know… do the "favor" for Larry is just brilliantly awkward and hilarious. Anne Ramsey as Momma is iconic. She's so over-the-top awful, you almost feel bad for Owen...almost! What I really appreciate about this film is how it balances the dark humor with some genuinely touching moments (well, as 'touching' as murder-for-hire can get!). Like, Larry actually does connect with Owen in a weird way, and the whole thing spirals into this crazy mess. There's one kinda disturbing scene where Owen imagines his mom is like a huge inflatable punching bag - that stuck with me, even when I first saw it! It's defintely not for everyone, but if you enjoy dark comedies with a touch of the absurd and some surprisingly good acting (looking at you Billy Crystal!), give it a watch. I think it's a gem, even if a bit twisted. Anyone else a fan? Or am I just weird? :P
