Withnail & I: Costume Goals or Just...Survival?
Okay, so I finally watched Withnail & I (I know, late to the party!). The whole movie is just... a mood. But I was OBSESSED with the clothes, obviously. Especially Withnail's! That tweed overcoat? I'd kill for it. Is it just me, or does he somehow manage to look effortlessly cool even when he's completely plastered and raving? I'm pretty sure my Grandad had the same coat in the 70s, but it looked way better on Withnail. Marwood's outfits were less...aspirational, let's say. More 'mildly terrified rabbit caught in headlights.' But that's kinda the point, right? I mean, there's that one scene where he's got like, 12 layers on in the cottage and still looks cold, haha. I actually felt sorry for him, even though Withnail was being a complete monster the whole time. So, question: Do you think Withnail's clothes are supposed to be inherently stylish, or is it just Richard E. Grant making everything look good because he's Richard E. Grant? And are Marwood's clothes just supposed to emphasize how out-of-place he is in the countryside? Curious to get your thoughts! Also, anyone know where I can get a replica of that overcoat? Asking for a friend... (it's me. I'm the friend.)
