"Some Kind of Wonderful": Underrated Hughes-esque Gem or Just...Okay?
Okay, movie buffs and fellow bookworms, OliviaCinema here! I just re-watched "Some Kind of Wonderful" (1987) and I'm feeling conflicted. I know it's considered a John Hughes adjacent film, but Howard Deutch directed it. Still, Hughes wrote and produced it, and it definitely feels like his vibe. It's got that 80s high school angst, the outsider yearning for the popular girl, the quiet crush bubbling underneath the surface... you know the drill! What gets me is how differently I feel about the Watts character (Mary Stuart Masterson). Like, she's CLEARLY the right girl for Keith (Eric Stoltz)! I’m always rooting for her, but I also find her character a little… I don't know, underdeveloped? Like, we get she's a drummer and a tomboy, but what else is there? (Also, can we talk about how she drives a vintage car and works part-time?! What a life for a high schooler!) Does anyone else feel like her pining for Keith overshadows any actual character development? Also, the whole Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson) thing... She's beautiful, sure, but is she even likeable? I get that Keith's blinded by her popularity, but after the date turns into a disaster, it feels a bit 'off.' I just can't figure out if this movie is clever, underappreciated, or if my nostalgic glasses are just too strong for it. So, what are your thoughts? Did you think this movie was as good as others or did you think it was okay?
