Dragnet (1987) - Underappreciated Comedy Gold?

Okay, so I gotta come clean. I love "Dragnet" (1987). I know, I know, it's not winning any Oscars, and it's definitely a product of its time, but hear me out. It's way funnier than it gets credit for. Aykroyd as Friday is pure genius. The whole 'Just the facts, ma'am' schtick is so overplayed, but he makes it WORK. Especially with Hanks' Streebeck playing off of him. The contrast is perfect, and some of that dialogue legitimately slays me. Like when Friday says, "I carry a Smith & Wesson, and you have the right to remain silent." Classic! But here's my theory, and maybe I'm reaching, but I think a lot of the humor comes from the undercurrent of social commentary. The whole P.A.G.A.N. organization is so over-the-top, it's almost making fun of the moral panic of the 80s. The virgin Connie Swail being sacrificed to a lizard? I mean, come on! It's absurd, but it kinda works. And Dabney Coleman as Jerry Caesar? Another perfectly cast and hilarious scumbag. I think it's trying to say something about corruption, maybe? Idk. Honestly, the whole movie feels like a live-action cartoon in the best possible way. I'm not saying it's high art, but it's a damn enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. I just think people go in expecting something serious because of the original series, and that's the wrong mindset. Go in expecting a silly, over-the-top buddy cop movie and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Plus, I steal lines from the movie all the time. "This is not a dress rehearsal!" I say that all the time at work!!! So, am I crazy for thinking "Dragnet" is secretly brilliant? Or am I just easily amused? Let me know your thoughts. "You're a detective, Friday, not a sociologist!" lol.
