Okay, "The Hidden" was surprisingly awesome!
So, I just watched "The Hidden" (1987) on a whim, and wow, I was not expecting that! I knew nothing about it going in, just saw it pop up on a streaming service and thought the synopsis sounded kinda interesting. Basically, people are turning into crazy violent criminals out of nowhere and this cop, Beck (played by Michael Nouri, who I only vaguely recognized), is teaming up with an FBI agent to figure out why. It's way more sci-fi than I thought it would be, and honestly, that made it even better. The first scene that really grabbed me was when that seemingly normal dude just goes on a rampage robbing a bank and stealing a Ferrari. Like, what?! And the way they explained the reason behind all the crazy behavior was kinda creepy and cool at the same time. I don't want to spoil it, but the 'thing' that's causing it is seriously nasty. I also liked the dynamic between Beck and Gallagher (Kyle MacLachlan). Gallagher's character is super weird and detached at first, which is funny because Beck is struggling to understand what's going on and Gallagher can't relate to a normal person. I'm not sure who directed this movie, but they did a good job keeping my attention the whole time. The special effects are definitely dated, but in a charming way? It gives it a totally unique vibe. There are a few moments where I felt myself thinking, 'Oh man, that looks so 80s,' but it didn't detract from the overall story. The action scenes are pretty good too! Not like, groundbreaking, but definitely entertaining. I also loved all the 80s fashion, lol. Overall, I'd definitely recommend "The Hidden" if you're looking for something a little bit different and enjoy a good sci-fi action flick with a healthy dose of cheesy 80s goodness. Don't think it will be for everyone especially if you hate older movies, but def worth the watch. Anyone else seen this? What did you think?
