Okay, "Broadcast News"... This Movie Hit DIFFERENT.

Alright, I just watched "Broadcast News" (1987) and I'm gonna be real, I went in totally blind. I knew NOTHING about it. I'm doing this deep dive into older movies, and this one came up on a 'best of' list somewhere. So, director... uh... whoever directed it, props. This wasn't just a rom-com-ish thing, it actually made me think. Like, REALLY think. I'm all about the vibes and the characters, and there's something incredibly relatable (even now) about Holly Hunter's character. She is me in a nutshell, stressed but trying to hold it together. Anyway, a love triangle between her, a solid reporter who's maybe not the prettiest but has the skills, and a news anchor who's good-looking but maybe not the smartest... it got me thinking about integrity and authenticity, especially in media, you know? My theory is that the movie is SUPER prescient (I had to google that word, lol). Like, it's a time capsule of how news was changing, and honestly, it feels like nothing's changed, but maybe gotten worse? The scene where William Hurt's character sweats on camera and decides he actually DID cry on air, even though he didn't... that was HUGE. That really solidified the idea that how something looks is more important than what actually is. The movie makes a case for, let's call them, 'the good guys' not winning... because they don't know how to play the game. It's depressing, but not in a bad way? It's more like a sobering wake-up call. And I even found myself sympathizing a little with Tom Cruise... I mean, William Hurt, lol. He's not a bad guy, he's just... a product of the system, right? He says himself that he doesn't think he's particularly smart. He just looks good. That scene where he practices crying in front of the mirror really stuck with me. It's kinda heartbreaking, because you can see he knows he's not what he should be. Anyway, thoughts? Am I totally off base here? I am new to this after all. It just felt like the movie was more about the evolution of media than anything else, with the love triangle just being the vehicle for that discussion.
