Babette's Feast: More Than Just Food...or Is It?

Okay, so I finally watched "Babette's Feast." I know, I know, late to the party as usual. But wow. I went in expecting a foodie movie, all drool-worthy shots of cooking, and while the feast itself was visually stunning, especially considering it's an older film, it was the characters that really got me. The sisters, Martine and Philippa, and their whole rigid, ascetic way of life...it was almost painful to watch at first. Like, lighten up, ladies! But then Babette arrives, this mysterious Frenchwoman with a past, and starts to gently, subtly, chip away at their austerity. The scene where she's first hired and basically accepts servitude without a word... that was heartbreaking. But I loved how her quiet dignity never faltered. And then the feast itself! The slow reveal of each dish, the growing joy and confusion on the villagers' faces...particularly General Löwenhielm getting all philosophical, lol. I actually laughed out loud when he started talking about grace. It's like food, good food, unlocked something in them they'd been suppressing for years. Like she was feeding their souls, not just their bellies. What I'm still chewing on (pun intended, sorry!) is the idea of artistry and sacrifice. Babette basically pours her entire fortune – and her entire spirit – into this one meal. Was it worth it? Did it truly change the sisters and the villagers or just give them a temporary reprieve from their self-imposed restrictions? I'm leaning towards the former, but I'm not entirely sure. I think the ending, where Babette reveals she spent all her money, and isn't leaving, is amazing. She doesn't regret it, she's happy she created something. It made me think about how we all express our talents/passions. Sometimes it feels selfish to pursue creative endeavors, but 'Babette' made me think...maybe it's a beautiful gift to share. Anyway, anyone else feel this way? What did you think of it?
