Just watched 'The Stepfather' (1987) - Whoa, talk about creepy!
Okay, so I just finished watching 'The Stepfather' (the original from '87, not the remakes) and I'm still a little freaked out! Like, the premise alone is messed up – this guy just snaps and kills his whole family, then reinvents himself to find another one? Yikes. Terry O'Quinn is seriously great playing the titular character. He does that 'perfectly normal guy' thing so well, it makes the sudden bursts of anger and the, you know, MURDER, that much more jarring. I think my favorite part was when he's staring into the mirror practicing his 'nice guy' smile. Pure nightmare fuel! What really got me was the subtle stuff. The way he'd get agitated over the smallest things, or how he'd try so hard to fit in. It's unsettling to watch this guy try to build a perfect facade when you know what he's capable of. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, wondering when he'd finally lose it again. Stepdad from hell! I'm not saying it's the best movie ever, some of the acting felt a little dated, and I wish they'd focused on the backstory a bit more (like, why is he doing this??), but honestly, if you like thrillers with a seriously unsettling villain, this is definitely worth a watch. Prepare to be creeped out! Also, anyone else catch the ending? I was yelling at the screen! OMG. Anyone seen the sequels or the remake? Are they any good or should I just stick with the original? Let me know!
