'House of Games': The Mind is a Muscle?
Okay, so I just saw 'House of Games' and wow, Mamet's dialogue is firing on all cylinders. I knew nothing going in, except that it was a con movie. Lindsay Crouse plays Margaret Ford, the shrink, and she's amazing. Stiff, controlled, but clearly something's boiling underneath. And Joe Mantegna? He's Mike, the grifter. Smooth as silk, the guy could sell you your own socks back. 'We're all con men, Margaret. That's what we do.' That line resonates, right? Like, truth bombs being dropped amidst the lies. The poker scene in the 'House of Games' itself was insane. The tension was palpable. You could practically hear the chips clicking and the lies being told. And the whole 'tell' thing? Fascinating. Crouse really nailed the transformation from detached observer to... well, I won't spoil it but it gets dark. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. What I really dug was how it played with perception. You think you understand what's happening, but then the rug gets pulled out from under you. Classic Mamet misdirection. And the dialogue! I swear, every other line is quotable. 'Confidence. It's what people want to buy.' It's not just about the scam, it's about human psychology, ya know? I'm gonna be thinking about this movie for a while. Anyone else blown away by this thing? I legit had to rewind a few scenes to make sure I caught everything. I'm thinking about diving into more Mamet stuff now. Any recommendations? Also, someone PLEASE tell me I wasn't the only one yelling at the screen at the end? I mean come on!
