Street Trash: Melted Mayhem or just Plain Messy?
Alright, so I finally got around to watching "Street Trash" after hearing about it for ages. Man, what a trip! The whole melting-hobo-due-to-ancient-hooch thing is definitely… unique. It's like someone took a Troma film, cranked the gore dial up to eleven, and then added a healthy dose of early 80s NYC grime. Anybody else get a "Basket Case" vibe from some of the low-budget, desperate atmosphere? Think Frank Henenlotter on bad acid. I gotta say, the effects are gloriously disgusting. That rainbow goo is just something else. There's a scene where the one dude melts on the toilet, and it's so over-the-top that it's almost funny (almost). But honestly, beyond the melting and the crazy Vietnam vet (who, let's be real, is kinda cartoonish), I'm not sure what to make of it. It tries to be edgy and shocking, and it succeeds in the gross-out department, but the story is kind of all over the place. And some of the acting? Yikes. I will say, though, that it has a certain… charm? It's like a train wreck, you can't look away. And it's definitely a product of its time. You wouldn't see something like this made today (well, maybe you would on Adult Swim). I'm still processing if I liked it liked it, but I can definitely say it's an experience, LOL. What did everyone else think? Am I missing something, or is it just a gloriously bad, schlocky mess? Anyone know why it's so hard to find out who directed this thing? Is it a case of someone wanting to erase this from their resume or something? Whatever the reason, it's now firmly planted in my memory, for better or worse.
