"Project A Part II": A chaotic, underappreciated gem? (Thoughts on Jackie Chan's direction)

Okay, so I just rewatched Project A Part II (1987) and I'm left...confused, but in a good way? Like, it's not nearly as tightly constructed as the first Project A. The plot is genuinely bonkers – Dragon's basically fighting everyone all at once - gangsters, revolutionaries, pirates... and dirty cops?!? - it feels almost like they threw every action movie trope into a blender, haha. But here's the thing: the cinematography, even with the sheer volume of stuff happening, is surprisingly well-handled. Take that scene where Dragon is trying to infiltrate the gangster's hideout while also keeping the revolutionaries from blowing everything up. The camera movements are frantic, mirroring the chaos, but they never lose sight of the geography. And the use of wide shots during the action sequences really lets you appreciate the stunt work – which is, of course, insane. I noticed also, with all the different factions in play, Jackie Chan uses colour coding in costumes fairly extensively, might be a coincidence but I think it really helps keep things straight. Also gotta admit, some of the comedic timing, especially Ng Man-tat's reactions, is pure gold. I'm starting to wonder if the 'messiness' is actually intentional? Like, maybe Chan was deliberately creating a sense of overwhelming absurdity to reflect the political climate of the time? I know it's a reach, and honestly, it's probably just a case of 'more is more' gone wild, but the film has SO much going on. The direction feels like Chan was experimenting with juggling a ton of narrative balls at once, and while not all of them are caught flawlessly, the sheer ambition is impressive. It's definitely a case where the sum is greater than its parts, y'know? It shouldn't work, but somehow, it kinda does. Anyway, just my two cents. It's definitely not a perfect film, it's got some pacing issues in the middle especially, but it's a fascinating watch as a kind of case study in controlled cinematic chaos. Anyone else have thoughts on this one? Am I totally off base here?
