Salem's Lot...The Sequel? Oh Honey, We Need to Talk About the 80s
Okay, so I finally got around to watching "A Return to Salem's Lot" (1987) and...whew. Where do I even begin? First off, I'm obsessed with the original Salem's Lot miniseries from '79. Obsessed! So, I went in with a bit of hope, even though I knew it wasn't exactly critically acclaimed. But, girl, the fashion. It's truly a time capsule. Michael Moriarty as Joe Weber is giving major 'slightly rumpled professor' vibes, but his son Jeremy (Ricky Addison Reed) is serving some serious 80s kid style. Think: lots of bright colors, windbreakers, and hair that screams 'Aqua Net.' Loved it! The plot itself is...well, it's something. Vampires want this anthropologist to write their freaking bible?! Like, okay, I guess. But honestly, I was more distracted by some of the costume choices. The vampires are rocking these really dated, almost theatrical outfits, and it lowkey pulls you out of the supposed scariness of it all. There's this one scene where a vampire is wearing, like, a velvet cape with a popped collar and I snorted. Sorry not sorry. That said, there are some moments that are genuinely creepy, mostly thanks to the atmosphere. But overall? This movie is a campy, over-the-top B-movie experience. Def not on par with the original, but if you're a fan of 80s horror cheesiness and, like me, appreciate the sartorial choices, then it's worth a watch for the laughs alone. Just don't go in expecting high art. Side note: does anyone know where I can get Jeremy's windbreaker? It's low key iconic.
