Wicked City: Animation Gold or Just Wild Nonsense?
Alright folks, AndersonCuts here. Just finished re-watching Wicked City (1987) and man, what a trip. I feel like this movie is either genius or absolute trash, and I can't decide which! The animation is STUNNING. Seriously, the detail in the demon designs and the way the action flows is just breathtaking, especially the transformation sequences. Whoever storyboarded this thing deserves a medal. But the plot... yeesh. A treaty between Earth and the demon world is ending, and these two cops have to protect some diplomat. Sounds simple enough, but it gets so convoluted so fast, with all the crazy demon powers and double-crosses. I'm really interested in how other people felt about the pacing and structure. Like, some scenes are brilliantly edited, creating a sense of urgency and dread, while others feel completely random and out of place. The erotic horror elements are... well, they're there, and definitely not for everyone. I'm curious if they felt integral to the story or just added for shock value. The fight scene with the spider woman is both terrifying and strangely beautiful, but does it actually advance the plot at all? Specifically, what did you all think of Taki and Maki's relationship? The chemistry between them felt a little forced to me, like they were ticking off boxes of "odd couple cop duo" without really building a believable connection. And the ending... I won't spoil it, but it left me scratching my head. Was it supposed to be poetic, tragic, or just plain confusing? So, what are your thoughts? Is Wicked City a flawed masterpiece of animation, or just a stylish mess? Let me know! I'm dying to hear other opinions on this one.
