Okay, Project X (1987) - Anyone Else Feel Weird About This One?

So, I finally watched Project X (the chimpanzee one, not the party movie lol) and...wow. I'm not really sure what to make of it. Matthew Broderick is like, peak Matthew Broderick in this, all earnest and slightly goofy. Seeing him connect with Virgil, the main chimp, was actually really sweet, especially when they're doing the baseball catch thing. It's hard not to feel for the chimps. Seriously got me thinking more about the ethics of animal testing – super relevant stuff. Not the kind of thing I expected going in, to be honest. What REALLY got to me was the ending. No spoilers, but it's not exactly a happy ending. It's definitely got some emotionally heavy parts that stick with you. It felt like the movie was trying to say something important, but also like it pulled some punches? I think maybe because it was a Disney movie it couldn't get too dark, but the premise itself is pretty darn dark. I'm conflicted. On one hand, it's a pretty good movie with some good performances. On the other hand, it feels exploitative in some ways, you know? Like, it uses the chimps' suffering to tug at your heartstrings, but doesn't fully explore the complexity of the situation. Anyone else have similar thoughts? Did the ending work for you? Kinda wanna hear some other thoughts! Also, anyone else find it kinda freaky that the director is unlisted? Is that weird or is it just me?
