Helene Hanff, Bookworm Icon: Thoughts on 84 Charing Cross Road

Okay, folks, I just re-watched 84 Charing Cross Road and I'm basically a puddle of sentimental goo. Anne Bancroft kills it as Helene Hanff. Her wit is just...chef's kiss. The whole premise is so simple: a writer in NYC starts writing to a bookstore in London. But their correspondence just blossoms. And Anthony Hopkins as Frank Doel? So understated and quietly charming. "Quoting from books is so much more polite than quoting from oneself," right? He lives it! What really got me this time around was just how much the film captures the love of books. The scene where she's describing her perfect edition of Pepys' Diary? I FELT that. And the build up to her finally being able to go to London...man. I'm trying to decide if it's a 'masterpiece' kinda film, but the simplicity almost takes it there. It's just so genuine. Also, side note: anyone else kinda shipping Helene and Frank? I know, I know, it's all about the books. But still! "The point is, I have a book, you have a book, and there we are." Sigh. Anyone else a fan? What's your fav moment? I'm ready to discuss!
