Forgotten Gem: "Black Widow" (1987) - Anyone Else Love This?
Okay, international film lovers, Priya here! I know we usually talk about stuff from all corners of the world, but I had a craving for something decidedly American the other night and revisited "Black Widow" from '87. Anyone else remember this one? It's got Debra Winger as an FBI agent obsessed with catching a mysterious woman (Theresa Russell) who she believes is a serial killer, bumping off rich husbands for their money. The twist? The killer is a master of disguise, so it's this cat-and-mouse game all over the US. What I always loved about it is the mood. It's so stylishly 80s, all sleek apartments and power suits, but with this really unsettling undercurrent. Theresa Russell is just amazing as Catherine. She plays the part with such a cold, detached charisma. There's this scene in Hawaii where she's dancing with a new mark, and the way she looks at him... you just know he's doomed. Winger is great too, but it's Russell that really steals the show. I'd be curious who directed it, it feels like it has a strong vision. Maybe someone like Brian de Palma (but I don't honestly know). It's definitely not a perfect film. Some of the plot points are a little...stretched, and the ending feels a bit rushed. But the atmosphere, the performances (especially Russell!), and the suspense kept me hooked the whole time. I feel like it scratches that same itch as some of the great French thrillers, like maybe a Chabrol, but with a much glossier Hollywood finish. It'd work for fans of Diabolique maybe, with the gender roles reversed. Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone else has a soft spot for "Black Widow." Let me know your thoughts! Maybe I'm off my rocker, but it's one of those films I keep coming back to. def worth a rewatch if haven't seen it in ages!
