Okay, so I just watched My Neighbor Totoro and...wow?
Alright guys, so I'm still on my classic movie journey, and I just finished watching My Neighbor Totoro. I went in completely blind – didn't even know who directed it (some dude named Miyazaki I think?). The plot sounded cute enough: two little girls move to the countryside while their mom's in the hospital, and they find forest spirits. I was expecting something... I don't know, maybe a little boring? I honestly wasn't super hyped. But it was beautiful! Like, genuinely touching. The scene where Satsuki and Mei are waiting at the bus stop in the rain with Totoro? Pure magic. The animation is so good, and the way Totoro just... stands there, all stoic and adorable. And when the Catbus shows up?! Totally unexpected and awesome. I was seriously grinning like an idiot. Mei is such a sweet little kid, too. Her determination is so cool, and her reactions are just so believable. Honestly, I was a little worried at first that it would be TOO childish for me, but it really wasn't. There's just something so comforting and heartwarming about the whole thing. Even though it's technically a "kids movie" I think there's a lot there for adults too, maybe even more so? It's like it unlocked some core childhood memory I didn't know I had. I'm still not sure what the overall message is, but my brain is soothed. I'll probably need to watch this again, and maybe even force my family to watch it with me this weekend. Any other Miyazaki recommendations for someone who liked this one? Also, side note: is it weird that I want a Totoro plushie now? I AM a grown man... but still. So cute!
