Rain Man: More Than Just a Road Trip Movie?

Okay, so I was rewatching "Rain Man" the other day (yeah, yeah, I know, showing my age!), and something struck me. We all remember the Dustin Hoffman performance, right? Iconic. But I think the movie's actually way more about Charlie's transformation than about Raymond's journey. Think about it: Charlie starts out as this totally self-absorbed, kinda sleazy car salesman who's only interested in the inheritance. He sees Raymond as a meal ticket, plain and simple. Everything is about HIM getting that money. But as they're stuck on that cross-country road trip, forced to deal with each other, Charlie slowly starts to...care? Remember the scene where Raymond freaks out about flying and Charlie calms him down? Or when he tries to explain things to Raymond in a way he'll understand? It's subtle, but you see the shift. It's almost like Raymond, in his own unfiltered way, forces Charlie to confront his own selfishness and actually become a better person. He starts prioritizing Raymond's well-being. So, my theory is: "Rain Man" isn't just about autism or the relationship between two brothers. It's about how empathy, even forced empathy, can change someone fundamentally. The road trip is a catalyst. Without that forced proximity, would Charlie have ever grown as a person? Probably not! What do you guys think? Am I looking too deep into this, or did anyone else get the same vibe? P.S. Anyone know the director? Googling... Ok, Barry Levinson. Thanks, Google!
