Grave of the Fireflies: Was Seita Low-Key the Problem?

Okay, so I just watched Grave of the Fireflies and WOW. Major tearjerker alert, obviously. I went in knowing it was sad, but like...damn. I'm not usually one for animated films, but the story got me. But here's the thing I can't shake: was Seita really doing the best he could? I know, I know, it's war, he's a kid, blah blah. But he seemed SO proud, almost stubborn about not wanting to ask for more help from his aunt. Like, dude, your little sister is starving! Swallow your pride. Remember that scene where he's burying their mom's ashes and finds all that money? Why didn't he just… buy a TON of food then? Instead, he hoards it and spends some on...fireflies? I mean, cute, but priorities, man! Maybe if he sucked it up and groveled a little more with the aunt, or gone to the authorities, things would have turned out differently. Or at least not AS bad. I'm not saying he's a villain or anything, more like... tragically flawed? It's like he wanted to be the hero so bad, he blinded himself to the pragmatic solution and let pride kill them both. Maybe that's the point of the film? I don't know, but it feels like there's more to it than just "war is bad." I'm not sure if I'm explaining this right, haha, but hopefully you guys get what I'm aiming for. Like, I feel really bad for Setsuko, but I also feel frustrated with Seita's actions in the film. What do you guys think? Also, gotta say I still don't know who the Director is? It feels so wrong for such a well-known film, but I don't even know where to start looking LOL. Maybe someone can drop their socials so I can check out more of his stuff.
