"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" - Still holds up! (Mostly...)
Okay, so I rewatched "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" with the kiddos this weekend, and it was such a trip down memory lane! I forgot how genuinely funny it is. Bob Hoskins is amazing as Eddie Valiant, the grumpy detective. The whole concept of toons and humans coexisting is just so clever. My 8-year-old was cracking up at Roger's antics the entire time – especially the ink gag when he gets nervous. Jessica Rabbit? Still think she's a little TOO much for kids, tbh, but my kids didn't seem to notice beyond her being drawn 'pretty'. The animation blending with live-action still blows my mind, even now. The scene in Toontown is just pure chaotic joy – so many classic cartoon characters crammed together! I did have to explain a few things to the kids, like what a 'pattycake' was in the ahem more suggestive sense, and why Judge Doom was so terrifying (seriously, Christopher Lloyd is brilliant but also gives me the creeps). My youngest (5) DID get a bit scared during the shoe-dipping scene, so fair warning for really little ones. One thing I noticed this time around is the pretty dark subplot about urban development and the freeways – kinda heavy for a kids' movie! But also, it's true, and good to get kids thinking about it- even if it's just a little bit. My husband thought it was more apparent now that we live in SoCal, lol. Overall, it's still a really fun watch, and I'd recommend it for a family movie night…just maybe pre-screen it if you have super sensitive kids or are worried about the innuendo. And maybe have some extra chocolate on hand, because, shoe dipping... shudders.
