Cinema Paradiso... did Toto REALLY need to leave?
Okay, so I just finished watching Cinema Paradiso again, you know, the Director's Cut cause I'm a glutton for punishment (and more scenes with Elena lol). And it's totally wrenching every time, right? The whole Alfredo/Toto thing is just so pure. But I always get stuck on this ONE point. Why did Alfredo force him to leave Giancaldo? Like, I get the noble intention – he wants Toto to have a bigger life than projectionist in a small town, blah blah. But was it REALLY necessary? I mean, couldn't Toto have just, I don't know, gone to film school while still coming back to visit? Maybe even helped Alfredo out at the New Cinema Paradiso? The goodbye scene at the train station KILLS me. And then seeing Toto years later, so successful but also kinda…empty? Was it worth it, Alfredo?? I know, I know, it's a movie, and that's the whole POINT, but still! I'm emotionally invested here! Also, did anyone else feel a little cheated that we didn't get to see more of Toto and Elena's reunion (or lack thereof)? I kinda wished they fleshed that bit out a little more. All those years, all that pining... and then... nothing much? Or am I just missing the subtle brilliance of it all? Maybe I need another rewatch. Someone talk me off this ledge. Anyway, what do you guys think? Was Alfredo justified in pushing Toto away so dramatically? Or was he being overly controlling and maybe a little selfish, even from a place of love? Curious to hear your takes!
