Akira's Fashion: Beyond the Bikes and Mayhem
Okay, so I just re-watched Akira (again!), and while the animation is obviously mind-blowing and the whole psychic powers thing is WILD, I'm REALLY stuck on the clothes. Not that anyone would expect haute couture in post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo, but the costuming tells a story, you know? Like, Tetsuo's whole transformation is visually represented by his clothing—going from the leather jacket loser to basically a god in a hospital gown (lol). And let's talk about Kei. Her outfits are so utilitarian but also cool? I'm obsessed with the practicality of her choices, the layering, the way everything seems to move with her during the action scenes. It's effortless cool, even when she's getting tossed around fighting for her life. Kaneda's jacket is obviously iconic, and everyone cosplays it, but are there other pieces that stand out to people? I guess my question is this: Did anyone else notice the subtle details in the costumes? I was trying to figure out if there were any kind of inspirations for the costuming, even subconsciously. Were there any films or designers that they pulled from? I'd love to hear if anyone has any ideas or knows the background of the costume design.
