Rambo III score: Underrated or Just... Loud?

Okay, folks, Hughesreviews back at ya! Let's talk "Rambo III." I know, I know, the movie itself is... uh... a product of its time, let's just say that. But I'm curious about Jerry Goldsmith's score. I've been revisiting it lately and I'm kinda torn. On one hand, it's HUGE. I mean, it's pure 80s action bombast, which is kinda what you expect. The strings are soaring, the brass is blaring, and the percussion is just relentless. Think it really captures the scale of the conflict and Rambo's… uh… enthusiasm for it. There are some really cool oriental influences, too, mirroring the Afghan setting and the Mujahedeen he's partnered with. The training sequence, in particular, has a great heroic quality. But then again, sometimes I feel it just becomes a wall of sound, overpowering everything. Like, did Goldsmith really need to go that hard during the horse chase scene? It's almost comical. So, what do you guys think? Is "Rambo III" a guilty pleasure score? Is it a genuinely great action score that just suffers from being attached to a… let's call it ambitious film? Or is it just a loud, repetitive mess? I'm genuinely curious to hear your thoughts. Maybe I'm just missing something (or maybe I need to dial back the volume a bit!).
