Twins (1988): Is it actually... good?!
Alright, so I just rewatched "Twins" (yeah, the Schwarzenegger and DeVito flick) and I have...thoughts. I went in expecting pure 80s cheese, and while there's definitely a healthy dose of that, I was genuinely surprised by how well it holds up. Hear me out! The setup is ridiculous, obviously: genetic experiment gone wrong (or right, depending on your perspective). But the buddy comedy aspect WORKS. Schwarzenegger's naive, overly-literal Julius is hilarious, especially bouncing off DeVito's street-smart, perpetually-scheming Vincent. The scene where Julius first tries pizza? Comedy gold. And honestly, the pacing is pretty solid. They don't waste time getting them together, and the plot moves along nicely, even when it gets kinda convoluted with the stolen prototype injectors. Chloe Webb and Bonnie Bartlett are also seriously underrated comedic actresses, killing it as Marnie and Mary Anne. Okay, it's not high art. The plot holes are big enough to drive a truck through, and some of the jokes haven't aged perfectly (e.g. the casual sexism). But as a piece of escapist 80s comedy, it's surprisingly effective. The dynamic between Arnold and Danny just works, and there's a genuine heart to the film that elevates it above just another dumb action-comedy. Plus, who doesn't love a good car chase involving a Cadillac? Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but I think "Twins" deserves a little more appreciation than it gets. What does everyone else think... or am I totally off my rocker here?
