Wanda: Did Anyone Else Think Otto Was Secretly a Genius?
Okay, so I just re-watched "A Fish Called Wanda" (again, natch, because John Cleese is my spirit animal) and I've got a theory brewing. Everyone always talks about Wanda being the mastermind (and she is, hello Jamie Lee Curtis!), but bear with me: what if Otto was playing everyone? Hear me out. We're all supposed to think he's this dumb, violent lug, right? But think about it. He manages to convince Wanda he's madly in love with her (enough for her to... ahem... manipulate him). He does manage to actually intimidate Archie (poor, stammering Archie). And sure, he eats Wanda's jewels, but what if that was a calculated move to buy time, sow discord, and generally throw everyone off his scent? Maybe he didn't actually swallow them; maybe it was all an act! He's supposedly this uncultured American, but he knows enough to quote Nietzsche? Suspicious. I know, I know, it's a long shot considering how hilariously inept he is most of the time. But his sheer audacity, his total lack of self-awareness… it could be cover. A brilliant strategy to appear less threatening, while he was really calling all the shots. Think about the times he gets so close to getting away with everything, only to be thwarted by, what seems like, plain stupidity. Is it stupidity, or masterful theater? What do you guys think? Am I reaching, or is Otto secretly the real criminal genius of the whole operation? (God, Kevin Kline was amazing, wasn't he? He just got that role.)
