Willow: Underrated Fantasy Gem or Just Cheesy 80s Fun?

Okay, horror friends, time for a slight genre detour (but I promise, it's got some dark undertones!). I just rewatched Willow (1988) and I'm still obsessed. I know, I know, it's not strictly horror, but Bavmorda is legit terrifying, right? Especially young me was SO SCARED of her snarling and those freaky hounds! Plus, the whole, like, baby-sacrificing vibe gives me the creeps. Anyway, what I wanted to know is, am I the only one who thinks this movie is super underrated? I feel like it gets lumped in with other cheesy 80s fantasy, but it's SO much better than insert mediocre fantasy movie here. The effects are actually pretty impressive for the time (that morphing scene!), and Warwick Davis is amazing as Willow. Even Val Kilmer is surprisingly good as Madmartigan. And let's be real, who didn't have a crush on him back then? But seriously, what are your thoughts? Does the movie hold up? Or is it just nostalgia goggles making me think it's better than it actually is? Also, anyone else think the troll designs are unintentionally hilarious? Because those things are just...wow. And one more thing, I read somewhere that Ron Howard directed it but he's not known for fantasy, or has he done any since then? Seems weird. Finally, I'm dying to know what part scared you as a kid! For me, it's def the turning people into pigs thing. Body horror before I even knew what body horror was!
