Okay, Hear Me Out: Bloodsport...But Like, Romantically?
Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking: Bloodsport? Lauren, you're obsessed with rom-coms! But hear me out! I just watched it for the first time (I know, I'm late to the party) and I was…strangely entertained? Like, the actual fighting is brutal and honestly kinda terrifying, but the whole vibe is so over-the-top 80s macho it's almost hilarious. And Van Damme in those super tight pants? Well, let's just say I've seen worse! My question is this: am I the only one who sees a hint of forbidden romance between Frank Dux (Van Damme) and Janice Kent (Leah Ayres)? Like, yes, she's a journalist and he's… breaking international law, but the way they look at each other in that one scene at the bar?! The tension! It's practically begging for a cheesy power ballad. Maybe I'm just projecting because I'll take any scrap of romance I can find, even in a movie where people literally get their skulls crushed. Also, side note: seriously, the pants in this movie. What's up with that? Was that just a thing back then or was Van Damme contractually obligated to showcase his…assets? Because I'm not complaining, exactly, just… curious. So, thoughts? Am I crazy for seeing romantic potential where there's probably just sweat and broken bones, or is there a hidden love story beneath the martial arts mayhem?
