Bloodsport: Okay, Okay, the Score's Kinda Rad, Actually

Alright soundtrack nerds, Hughes here. Let's talk Bloodsport. I know, I know, it's a Van Damme flick filled with roundhouse kicks and questionable acting choices (Bolo Yeung, though, absolute legend). But hear me out! The score, composed by Paul Hertzog, has some genuinely awesome moments. It's not exactly groundbreaking, but it perfectly captures that cheesy 80s martial arts vibe. Think synthy goodness layered with some oriental-inspired melodies. It's a guilty pleasure, for sure. Specifically, the training montages? That music SLAPS. Total adrenaline rush fuel. And when Frank Dux is facing Chong Li in the final fight, the tension builds up really well, especially in the parts where it gets more quiet, the score adds to the drama. There's a track called 'Fight to Survive' that is a total banger. I'm not saying it's John Williams level or anything, but for a low-budget martial arts film, it's surprisingly effective. There's a few cues that are... questionable, let's just say (a bit too reliant on generic synth sounds) but the good outweighs the bad imo. I even did a little digging and found out Hertzog did a bunch of other stuff, including 'Kickboxer', which has a similarly awesome (if flawed) score. So yeah, if you're into 80s scores and want something a little different, give the Bloodsport soundtrack a listen. Don't expect a cinematic revolution, but it's a fun listen and a nostalgic trip. Tell me I'm wrong, go ahead! I'm prepared to defend my (possibly misguided) love for 80s cheese.
