Mississippi Burning - Anyone else catch this detail about Mrs. Pell?
Okay, so I've seen Mississippi Burning like... a million times (give or take, lol). I always get sucked into Dafoe and Hackman's performances. BUT, this time, I was really focusing on Frances McDormand as Mrs. Pell. Such a nuanced performance! I'm wondering if anyone else picked up on the tiny hints that maybe she wasn't completely innocent in the whole situation, even though she's clearly terrified of her husband? Like, when she 'reluctantly' gives up the location of the bodies, did anyone else think it was a little... calculated? I can't quite put my finger on it. It's like she's playing a part, even then. I KNOW she's abused and living in fear, but there's something else there, right? It's not a black and white situation. No pun intended, but, you know.. And another thing- The one officer that tries to kiss her, is it that obvious that she hates her husband, that he would try that? Or does he just know he has power over her anyway so why not? Maybe I'm just overthinking it after so many rewatches, but I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on Mrs. Pell's character! What did you take away from THAT performance?
